Power Systems - T & D

Expertise in Transmission and Distribution Training

Tata Power operates a vast transmission network of thousands of circuit kilometers across India. This included project in Mumbai, India as well as transmission lines from Bhutan to Delhi through Powerlinks Transmission Limited, and other regional strengthening projects.

*Building on the success in Delhi, TATA Power has expanded its footprint, winning licenses to operate four Distribution Utilities in Odisha, with a focus on implementing global best practices and technology for reliable, affordable power, and excellent customer service.

TPSDI Centre of Excellence for Transmission and Distribution

TPSDI builds on this wide and deep expertise and experience of Tata Power to provide comprehensive training at our "Centre of Excellence for Transmission and Distribution Skills" at the sprawling 10-acre campus in TPSDI-Shahad, Mumbai.

TPSDI-Shahad combines practical learning with specialized facilities, including a 110 KV transmission lines with AH and DH towers, a 22 KV live substation, 22KV tower and distribution lines with pole-mounted distribution substation, aerial bunched conductors, and distribution pole erection facilities.

Campus Facilities

TPSDI-Shahad has a dedicated cable-jointing training centre which trains people in LT, HT, and EHV cable preparation and jointing. The centre also has life sized Ring Main Units (RMU), Feeder Pillars, transformers, current transformers (CT), potential/voltage transformers (PT), and capacitive voltage transformers (CVT). The centre is located next to a 110KV Tata Power Receiving Station that is also utilized for training "field visits" as required.

Additionally, TPSDI-Shahad has facilities to train people on switchgear, protection relaying, different types of earthing and earthing pit, and batteries and battery maintenance. The centre has a dedicated energy meter lab that also trains people in smart metering systems.

At TPSDI, transmission courses cover installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance of transmission lines, substations, transformers, cables, and more. The distribution courses cover power systems, substations, transformers, circuit breakers, surge arrestors, capacitor banks, and earthing systems. TPSDI's expert-led programs ensure trainees are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills demanded by the industry.

The centre is also home to a first of its kind in India Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) training facility. This state-of-the-art training facility aims to provide power system engineers and technicians with a safe environment to develop their skills in operation & maintenance of GIS as well as its troubleshooting, testing, interlocking, and integration with protection systems and SCADA. The 220 kV GIS at the TPSDI-Shahad is a fully working installation that can be safely used for training and for people to pick up skills that will bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Trainees will benefit from the wealth of experience and knowledge brought by TPSDI's experienced faculty members who have over 30 years of expertise in Transmission and Distribution. TPSDI's experienced subject matter experts can also cover different technologies like geographic information system for asset mapping, packet substations, SCADA, and distribution management system (DMS).

Offering expertise globally and nationally

Global impact

In collaboration with esteemed organizations such as USAID, USEA, and POWER AFRICA, TPSDI led transformative training initiatives. Notably, it equipped Ethiopian Electric Utility employees with specialized knowledge in Distribution Substation O&M and conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) program focusing on Safety and Isolating Equipment.

In Liberia, TPSDI played a pivotal role in training trainers for On-the-Job Training under the auspices of the Millennium Challenge Account - Liberia (MCA-L). This initiative aimed to empower the workforce of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, fostering sustainable development in the region.

National Impact

TPSDI has provided targeted technical training on Power Transmission to senior executives of the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company. TPSDI has also trained people from Voltas, IndiGrid, ThyssenKrupp, and others.

Alliances and Recognitions

TPSDI has partnerships with organizations like Gujarat Energy Training & Research Institute (GETRI) and is a part of the Power Sector Skills Council (PSSC).

TPSDI Hubs are recognised by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) as category I training institutes "for imparting training relating to operations and maintenance (O&M) of the electric power systems in the field of power transmission/ distribution."
